| Review summary: Cherry Puff is a DVD arhive site with about 400 titles of mainstream porn flicks. Despite a low price, it does have a number of flaws of which the missing break-down into scenes as well as decent previews are the most important. Video quality could also be improved. |
I wasn't quite sure I knew what to make of this site going in. It is an odd name for, what's basically the equivalent of an online adult-video store; however, the list of titles you get a sneak peak at on the tour have caught my eye, as well as the respectable list of niches (twenty-two in total). As always, I shall reserve judgment until I've gotten a good look at the members area.
Upon entering the member's area, I was greeted with a layout that could best be described as mouth-watering. The color scheme was a light-pink and cherry-red. Topping the page was a banner well-suited to the theme, showing the mouth of some would-be goddess a nanosecond away from consuming two luscious cherries; all whilst two totally nude platinum-blond babes lie naked in the backdrop. Quite the delicious pairing.
Aside from the unique theme, they've also got ease of navigation going for them. Your main menu is at the top of the page, and on the left-hand side you'll find all the DVD categories. Other than a few featured flicks going down the middle of the page, and a search engine in the top right-hand corner of the page, there isn't much else you'll have to keep in mind.
As I said earlier, there's 22 niches to choose from in total. That's not the biggest list I've seen, by any means, but I was still impressed, nonetheless, with its diversity. The flicks are pretty much mainstream straight hardcore without being unique. Not many of the big production studios are present though.
There's currently 384 titles available at Cherry Puff, a decent number but hardly much compared to the competition, but when you take in consideration the price, it's a moot point. What I did find somewhat troubling, however, is how unevenly dispersed the content is. While this is to be expected, it goes a bit far here. Several categories (cum shots, DP, fetish, hairy, etc...) have as few as five to eight movies, while others, i.e., water-sports, have as many as 37.
They're laid out with a one sentence summary of the synopsis, and a thumbnail (79x111) image of the DVD cover. Clicking on the DVD cover, or the "More Detais" button will get you a slightly larger image (103x192 pixels), as well as a brief synopsis, cast list, release date, running time, and the name of the director. But that's all the info you are going to get sadly. There is no info about scenes, who stars in each scene, no preview pictures or anything else to decide if you want to download or not. AND you can only download the whole movie - not a single scene from it. This results in huge files of up to 1 gb a piece.
Movies can be streamed in Real Player, with both narrow band or broadband options. The real media files played smoothly for me, even with the broadband option; however, as you'd probably expect, the narrow band option had a much smaller resolution. In fact, I'd advise you not to waste your time with it at all - unless you're on a dial-up connection.
Moreover, for downloading you only have to get one option: Superband. These are high quality, high-resolution AVI files. All in all, this may not be the best stop for those with a slower question.
As I mentioned earlier, the superband files are quite big, and if you plan on downloading one, with server-side download-speeds ranging wildy, you'll be in for quite the wait. On the bright side, the Superband movies look decent. I would, however, recommend you avoid downloading more 'retro' movies on the site, as many are clearly VHS transfers, and shitty ones at that.
Case in point: A little flick called Bikini Beach Party - both visual and audio quality were horrid; in addition, with a screen size of 480x352 and a bitrate of 1000 kbit/s, you'd think these would look a little better. This was grainy enough as it is, but when I maximized to full-screen, it was barely watchable. So, I'd recommend you stick with the more modern titles here although the resolution is still preventing the movies to look better than average.
All in all, I think Cherry Puff is a decent deal if you want some cheap mainstream standard porn. The price of admission, in my opinion, clearly undermines most of the flaws I pointed out in this review. You'll find a diverse selection of regularly updated adult flicks, a user-friendly design, and what looks to be pretty decent customer support. When you couple all of that with the fact that membership can be yours for as low as $6.65 per month, it's worth checking out.
